What have you read lately that’s good?
Right now, I’m reading a paper copy of the Tao Te Ching (and loving it). On my kindle, I’ve got these books open: Brave New World (kind of dense), Thus Spake Zarathustra (good stuff), The Poetic Edda (I’m working on a novel concept related to Norse mythology), The Mammoth Book of Golden Age Science Fiction (edited by Isaac Asimov), The Art of Worldly Wisdom by Baltasar Gracián and The Shadow Factory: The Ultra-Secret NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America.
That last one sounds like a timely tell-all but I’m stuck around 65% of the way into the book, mired in meaningless minutiae, like what paintings are on the wall at NSA headquarters in Crypto City. It’s infuriating that a respected author like James Bamford would promise such an enticing book and deliver this kind of brain-deadening monotony.
In the science fiction anthology mentioned above though is The Weapons Shop by A.E. van Vogt, a monster classic about counter-economic firearms traders with great defensive weapons tech and, well, I don’t want to spoil it for you. But if you haven’t read The Weapons Shop, you don’t know what you’re missing.
